How to choose the right stretch film gauge?

Table of Contents

PE stretch film was first made of Eva as self-adhesive material, but its cost was high and it had flavor. Later, PIB and VLDPE were used as self-adhesive materials. The substrates now mainly consist of LLDPE, C 4, C 6, C 8 and metallocene PE (MPE). The tensile film has high flexibility, is not easy to damage, has explosion resistance, impact resistance, tear resistance, tensile strength can replace the box packaging. Under the same weight, the actual packaging area of the ultra-thin winding film is about 3 times that of the traditional winding film on the market.

Machine-used tensile stretch film is a kind of stretch film. Compared with ordinary stretch film, it is stronger in thickness, elongation and ductility.

With so many different sizes, styles, and thicknesses, it can be tricky to decide which packaging is best for your business. Keep reading to find out more!

For Chinese stretched film suppliers, the stretched film gauges are as follows:

stretch film gauge

General stretch film gauges:

Machine stretch film: width 500mm, thickness 28um-30um

Manual hand stretch film: width 300mm, 350mm, 450mm, 500mm, thickness 15um-30um. Available in slitting various specifications.

Compared with the ordinary stretching film, the machine-used stretching film is relatively fixed, only 10 cm, 15 cm, 20 cm, 25 cm, 50 cm and so on, the weight will be determined by the installation size.

| 1. thickness

The thickness of the machine-used stretch film is generally thick, the thickness of the ordinary stretch film is between 13μm and 22μm, and the thickness of machine-used stretch winding film is between 20μm and 35μm, the mechanical properties of the tensile stretch film will be improved with the increase of the thickness. We all know that if it is hand-packed items, we will wrap according to the quality of the stretch film, for the poor quality will slow down the appropriate speed to complete the packaging work. The machine stretch film is a mechanically fixed file, self-running, stretch film mechanical performance can not meet the requirements of normal work, so in order to ensure the mechanical packaging, will correspondingly improve the quality of machine stretching winding film, increasing thickness is a proven method.

| 2. Draw ratio

We have all heard that the stretching rate of the tensile stretch film is between 200%-600%. As the mechanical operation of the tensile winding film, there are additional requirements for the stretching rate. At present, the general requirement is 700%, which is a one-meter machine with the tensile stretch film that can stretch 7 meters without breaking.

| 3. Malleability

Ductility refers to the transverse tensile rate, the raw material of the film is linear particles, the longitudinal tensile strength is strong, and the transverse tensile strength is weak, which obviously can not meet the packaging needs.

Therefore, a suitable metallocene (other density polyethylene isomer) is added to the raw material, which increases the molecular weight per unit volume, thereby strengthening the tensile force applied transversely.

Finally, the tensile stretch film manufacturers provide you with the following common machine-used tensile stretch film gauges:

  • 2.5 kg, 22μm, 50CM thick, about 260m wide
  • 3.0 kg 22μm thick 50CM wide about 350m
  • 4.0 kg 22μm thick 50CM wide about 450m
  • 5.0 kg 22μm thick 50CM wide about 550m

By analogy, the other width of the scale calculation can be.

For the international stretch film customers, stretch film gauges are as follows:

Stretch film gauges typically range from 37 to 150 in gauge. The meter can be converted to Mills, Microns, or other units. This level of thickness ensures that the wrap can stretch taut to your products without the risk of puncturing. Lighter gauges ensure efficient wrapping of smaller, lighter loads, while heavier gauges are designed for significantly larger applications. If you need to convert stretch wrap thickness to other units of measurement, this handy conversion chart can help.

Gauge: The thickness of a plastic sheet, or in this case, stretch film. It can be measured in mils or microns. The higher the gauge mil or micron, the thicker the plastic, and the more durable the product.

Here are some general stretch film gauge weight guidelines:

  • 30 Gauge – Ideal for loads up to approximately 800 lb.
  • 63 Gauge – Ideal for loads up to approximately 1300 lb.
  • 70 Gauge – Ideal for loads up to approximately 1600 lb.
  • 80 Gauge – The most common thickness of stretch wrap. Ideal for loads up to approximately 2200 lb.
37-gaugeA light pre-stretch wrap suitable for light, uniform loads of up to 800 pounds.
47-gaugeA hybrid or equivalent film. Can be used for box and case wrapping or medium-weight loads up to 1800 pounds.
60-gaugeA light true-gauged film is suitable for light to medium loads up to 1800 pounds.
63-gaugeA hybrid or equivalent film, sometimes sold as 16-micron film. Suitable for loads up to 2200 pounds.
80-gaugeA versatile, medium-duty true-gauged film for loads up to 2200-2400 pounds. The most common stretch film thickness.
100-gaugeA heavier-duty true-gauged film that can hold loads up to 2800-3000 pounds. Machine stretch wrap in this gauge can be used to wrap pallets of heavy, irregular objects such as steel beams or 55-gallon drums.
150-gaugeA very heavy-duty true-gauged stretch film for extremely heavy loads, loads with many sharp points or corners, and heavy irregular objects that may shift during transit. Typically must be machine applied to achieve proper tension.
